As summer brings sweltering heat, pet owners in Texas and other warm places should make their furry friends' comfort a top priority. We have some Labrador Retrievers that just love being outside, regardless of the heat index. However, the high temperatures can quickly lead to heat stress and dehydration in pets, which can be dangerous and even life-threatening. Fortunately, by taking a few proactive steps, you can ensure your pets enjoy the summer safely and comfortably. Here are ten essential tips that we try to stick to and hope will also be a good guide for you to keep your pets cool and hydrated throughout the season.

1. Provide Plenty of Fresh Water

Keeping your pets hydrated starts with access to fresh, clean water at all times. Aim to change their water at least twice a day, especially during hot weather. Dogs typically need between 1/2 to 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight daily. We have found that putting some ice cubes in the water intrigues them to make them drink more or go to a new bowl.

Hydration is essential and sometimes needs to be customized to the pet. For example, a 50-pound dog should drink 25 to 50 ounces of water each day. Consider using heavy water bowls that are hard to tip over, or choose dispensers that offer a continuous flow to encourage drinking. Having additional water bowls outdoors can also help maintain hydration.

2. Create a Cool Outdoor Environment

If your pets enjoy the outdoors, you can create a shady retreat for them to escape the sun. Use umbrellas, tarps, or garden structures to provide shade. Research shows that dogs can overheat when temperatures rise above 90°F, so having a safe space is crucial.

Introduce a cool, grassy area where they can relax. Regularly monitor the outdoor temperature, and consider bringing your pets inside if it gets too hot.

3. Time Outdoor Activities Wisely

Plan outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day. Early mornings or late evenings are ideal, typically before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m. It's during peak temperatures that pets can quickly become overheated. Our rule is that we can spend some time outdoors in the cooler morning temps or late evening cool down periods, but during the hottest part of the day, the inside AC is where we need to be!

When outdoors, it is imperative to watch for signs that your pet might be overheating, such as excessive panting or lethargy. If you notice these symptoms, take them indoors to cool down immediately.

4. Invest in Cooling Products

Pet cooling products can greatly help in beating the heat. Cooling mats, vests, and bandanas are specifically designed for pets and can help lower their body temperature.

For example, a cooling vest can reduce a dog's temperature by up to 15°F. Research these products based on your pet’s breed and size to find the best options. There are some great options at your local Pet or Feed store and online.

5. Schedule Regular Grooming

Regular grooming is key to helping your pet stay cool. For long-haired breeds, consider trimming their coats for better air circulation but avoid cutting too close to the skin as fur provides sun protection. Most professional groomers are accustomed to which cut is best for the breed in question.

A weekly brush can remove dead fur and dirt, which can trap heat. This simple practice can make a big difference in your pet’s comfort during hot months.

6. Monitor Your Pet for Signs of Heatstroke

Recognizing the signs of heatstroke is vital. Symptoms can include excessive panting, drooling, rapid heart rate, and lethargy. If your pet shows any of these signs, move them to a cooler spot immediately and offer fresh water.

In more severe cases, don't hesitate to seek veterinary assistance. Heatstroke can be fatal if not addressed quickly. There are many readily available Pet ER's in most areas, or you can contact an emergency vet online or via telephone 24 hours a day.

7. Use Ice and Cold Packs

To help your pets cool down, consider using ice packs in their resting areas. Wrap a few ice packs in towels and place them where your pets lie down. You will find that your pets will gravitate to the cool spot if you make in inviting and place in an area that they feel secure.

This simple action can offer significant relief by providing a cool surface for them to relax on. Always supervise your pets around ice packs to prevent them from chewing on them. Once any damage is on the packs, dispose of them immediately.

8. Set Up a Splash Zone

If your pet loves water, setting up a small kiddie pool or using a hose on them can be a fun way to help them cool off. Many dogs enjoy running through sprinklers or splashing in shallow pools. Our big dogs will jump in an animal trough to cool down. However, we ensure that they are never in there alone and can easily get in and out of the area to prevent accidental drowning.

Keeping pets cool can be fun and chilling for both your pet and you- Just make sure the water is safe and always monitored to ensure they have a refreshing and enjoyable experience!

9. Reduce Food Quantity

On hot days, your pets may have a decreased appetite. Consider reducing their food portions to lessen the energy they expend digesting. Our pet assured us not to worry about them eating less (as long as there are no other symptoms) during the hot temps, because they are choosing to do so. Loss of a bit of appetite can be normal, just keep an eye out for other issues.

As always keep fresh water accessible, and keep an eye on their eating habits to ensure they receive enough nutrition. If their appetite drastically declines, consult your veterinarian.

10. Educate Yourself about Pet-Safe Plants

When designing outdoor spaces for your pets, make sure the plants you choose are safe for them. Certain popular plants can be toxic if ingested, which can add stress if your pet explores those areas.

Research pet-friendly plants and create a safe outdoor environment where they can roam without worry. Plants can be comforting and create a beautiful landscape, but pet safety must come first.

By focusing on hydration, providing adequate shade, and monitoring their well-being, you can ensure your pets have a delightful and safe summer. Remember, prevention matters, and a little preparation goes a long way!

Taking these straightforward steps can make a real difference. Stay proactive and help your pets stay cool and hydrated this summer. We are going to buckle down in Texas, keeping our AC's set to low, our pools full of clean water and our pets cool and happy!
